I was apprehensive about the show at Doug Fir. There were a couple of reasons. Regardless of the details, it turned out to be a good, even great show— the lineup was diverse, but everyone was a consummate professional. Our sound gal Montaine was incredible— she admitted that even she had a good time. There were the post-punker new wavers Empty Room, the revival rockers Titans Of Oblivion and us, the dark wave rockers Written In Ashes. All in all quite the incredible Wednesday night show. The audience thinned out a bit in the middle of our set, but our people stuck around and ha d a good time. We kept it tight and fast and wrapped it all up in 45 minutes or so. Thanks to you if you came and thanks again if you stuck around. Now erm, I need to finish my martini and go to bed.

It always surprises me, even though by now it shouldn’t. Yesterday I began moving my blog here and today I know that this is the right decision. Here’s why…

My first real post here was categorized under “dreamland.” This morning Reed McClintock, a high-level Illusionist— and a wonderfully friendly and charismatic fellow— sent me a short relevant message. We’ve been discussing creating music for his stage show and he’s got a song in the current performance that is dreamy and upbeat, almost happy. I’m going to be writing a piece for him in this vein, and it’s going to need to feel a lot like this track. The track is called “Children (Dream Version)” from Robert Miles 1996 release “Dreamland.” It’s an excellent old trance tune. Check it out…

Synchronicity is so very fascinating. I had no idea that it was Jung that coined the term.

Lair! Theif!

Dreamland is a very surreal place… it’s full of reality whilst being nothing more than a playground of all rules unbound unreality. Still I feel that dreams are extraordinarily important. They are to me. They are all full of meaning and direction.

Sarah was there with me this time as I was putting another woman whom I loved on a train. It might have been the future, but it could have as easily been the past. The train was crowded and it was warm. There were huge open doors in the middle of the passenger car which was comfortably designed in an isometrical way. Seemed like a living room theater kind of office-like layout where the passengers each had their own seat but shared a thin communal desk.

I’m not clear if I was sending the woman away or if she was leaving of her own accord. Her face is hidden to me now, but I know that I already know her. I knew she had to leave and it was the best thing for all of us.

She started to say something and I immediately yelled at her drowning her words… “LIAR!… THIEF!” There was an uncomfortable silence as all heads turned to me in the very near-full car. I was enraged. I yelled it again, “Liar! Thief!” And then I just stared at her. She was welling up with emotion, it only took 5 or 10 seconds and I caught her words “I just…” as once again I obliterated her words as I began packing my laptop into a sleeve, “liar.” It was all I had to say now. I turned to the open door and noticed the train was beginning to pull out slowly. I simply said “Thief.” as I secured my laptop sleeve over my shoulder and I jumped to the ground.

I think I was already cured of tears over the matter, but in my mind I heard my own justifications “She’s a thief… because she stole my heart… and I want it back.”

Sarah and I converged on a dry slope of hill leading away from the trainstop. We walked silently hand in hand. I think she said “It is done.”

This year I have penned a lot of music. All told, I’m fast approaching 7+ hours of music if listened to continuously. Suprisingly, there’s only a handful of people I can think of that have heard all of my work to date.

This isn’t even all of it… I’m horribly unorganzied… I know I’ll find more after I post this…

I got married, experienced a life-altering honeymoon. Lost a great job— found a good job. Lost a car, got a free car, sold that car, bought a better one… shit… a lot of stuff has happened. I also self-discovered the color blue. I missed my mom a lot this year.

And yet… with all the good which has happened, I still feel melancholy. Grumpy me.

Talked to sweet couple from San Fran tonight… I don’t know who they were anymore than they know who I am— other than the obliquely anonymous relationship that a performer has with an audience and vice versa. They told me that they felt shivers of excitement from a performance— well, at least one of them did. Which is extraordinary as I have felt that on-stage performing and I’m just happy to have heard once that I was able to help create the circumstance in which that was able to occur for another person.

Being on stage doesn’t make you a rock star. Being able to emotionally and viscerally influence those around you doesn’t either… being able to talk to those people as fellow beings and being able to thank them for being part of the experience you helped create… that is being a rock star. Be genuine. Be human. Share. Cooperate on a grand scale. Be bigger than that from whence you came and share it at least once.

Thank you cute SF couple, you made my year. Seriously.
